The Eclipse Prayer
During the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it happens that there was a solar eclipse on the day of his son’s (Ibrahim) death. Some people claimed that the solar eclipse happened due to the child’s death and the deep sadness of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Al-Mughirah ibn Shu`bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that, “The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) on the day when (his son) Ibrahim died. So the people said that the sun had eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse pray and invoke Allah.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
In such circumstances, the prayer should be offered from the beginning of the eclipse until it is over as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “If you see anything of that, then offer prayer until it passes.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
