Breaking Wind During Prayer

Question:

I heard hadiths that if a person breaks wind during prayer, he does not have to leave the prayer unless he hears sound or finds a smell. So, if I know that I broke wind, could I still continue my prayer because I did not either hear sound or find a smell?

Answer:

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “If any one of you has pain in his abdomen, but is doubtful whether or not anything has issued from him, be should not leave the mosque unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell.” (Muslim)

`Abbad ibn Tamim said: My uncle asked Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something.” (Al-Bukhari)

First of all, the Prophet (peace be upon him) directed us to relieve ourselves before offering prayer. Wudu’ (ablution) cannot be invalidated by doubt, rather a person must be certain that he/she has broken it. In case he/she is certain that he has broken his ablution, then he should stop praying and perform a new ablution.

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that a person must be in a state of purification while offering prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah does not accept any prayer without purification…” (Ibn Majah)
